Leadership in Changing Times: Empowering Young Taiwanese Generations

NATPA 2014 National Conference

August 14-17, 2014

Vancouver, B.C., Canada

The ever-fast changes in all aspects of society in contemporary times have demanded effective leadership skills in individuals and new leadership in organizations. Dubbed as the “model minority”, young Taiwanese in North America excel in academics and scholarships. In spite of their talent, Taiwanese very seldom assume administrative leadership in their professional organization or in their national politics. For example, there is not a single Taiwanese serving in the BC parliament and none in the Canadian parliament. Yet, these positions present the opportunity and allow some power to make changes to organizations and society. There is a great need to cultivate leadership in young Taiwanese in North America and to support young leadership that is emerging in Taiwan – our motherland.

The 2014 NATPA National Conference is geared to inspire young people for preparing for leadership competence and for assuming effective leadership. NATPA as an organization provides a sound ground for the engagement of administrative leadership by young Taiwanese scholars and professionals in North America. In this conference, an inter-disciplinary program will focus on leadership which will be exemplified by both accomplished senior and talented younger Taiwanese scholars and practitioners who are leaders in their profession and academic fields. The broad topics will range from humanities (cultural studies), health and medicine, sciences, and engineering. Within these contexts, leadership for democracy in Taiwan and for NATPA’s future will form as an integrated part of the conference. The conference will showcase innovative, stimulating, and practical thoughts and achievement of Taiwanese. The conference will engender leadership in young Taiwanese, inspiring them to advance to administrative and, perhaps, political leadership in the future. There will also be useful information for maintaining good health for all. The preconference on NATPA’s future would serve to renew the missions and goals with directions and strategies for NATPA, with one of the final goals being for greater leadership involvement by young Taiwanese.
