Support the people of Hong Kong for pursuit of democracy and unfettered elections

October 2nd, 2014

Hong Kong ribbonAs the world watches the peaceful pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, it is hard for anyone not to be inspired by the iconic images of hundreds of thousands of students and people in the City Center over the past few days.

The unfettered election in Hong Kong is only part of the basic human rights. Suffering from police brutality, under tear gas and pepper spray, the brave people of Hong Kong continue to besiege the city’s central business and government districts all peacefully to demand democratically free elections.  This is for an unfulfilled promise made to them 17 years ago when Hong Kong was returned to China from British government.

The “Umbrella Revolution” is to assert the people power.  With faith and courage, people will together overcome the brutal force of the dictatorship, and that humble umbrellas, ratty masks, and household plastic wraps are more powerful and stronger than batons, tear gas, and pepper spray.

The North America Taiwanese Professors’ Association supports and salutes to the great people of Hong Kong while fervently condemning the police brutality in Hong Kong and any repression ploys coming from the Beijing government.
